The First Black History Now Essay Contest

The Black History Now Essay Contest is intended to spotlight the absolute necessity for comprehensive African-Diaspora History in all the grades of our public schools. Teachers and other adult facilitators are encouraged to creatively engage and enroll youth in the Contest.

This year’s theme is “U.S. Slavery Then – and the Implications for 21st-Century Liberation Education.” This theme commemorates the bicentennial (200th anniversary) of the “legal” abolition of the international Slave Trade. A hard-copy and electronic/web starter bibliography is provided below.

The essay contest is for K-12 youth, with outstanding awards and prizes for the most insightful/best essays - in each of 3 age-group categories.

1) K-5th grade;

2) 6-8th grade;

3) 9th-12th grade.

The Contest is highly inclusive: in-school youth; after-school programs, youth recreational programs, religious/spiritual youth programs, etc. are all urged to participate!!
Essays will be judged on Black History content, comprehensiveness of thought, research and presentation relevant to the chosen topic, neatness, and grammar. The Prize winning essays will be read at the BNYEE's Juneteenth* Commemoration event in early June 2008. * Commemorates the date- June 19, 1865 -that the Texas Enslaved African People learned of Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Essays are to be submitted with the Official Entry Form. All those interested are encouraged to widely reproduce and disseminate this announcement and entry form. Early submission of Essay Entry Forms will assist the Contest Sponsors to gage the numbers of students participating in the Contest. This will assist in assembling the human and other resources needed to read and assess the Essay entries.


The Black New Yorkers for Educational Excellence (BNYEE) is looking for Co-sponsors/Contact individuals and organizations. We request the names and contact information (school/organization names, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses) - for anyone who has formal contact with young people and willing to encourage and enable their participation in the First BNYEE Black History Now Essay Contest.

ESSAY REQUIREMENTS General

DEADLINE: All entries must be submitted by MAY 15, 2008

• All works must be typed on 8.5X11 plain white paper...
or written legibly on ruled loose-leaf paper
• All works should be well organized. Place the topic/title/page number at the top of the page.
• Highest credit will be given to work that shows depth of research, originality and imagination. Footnotes are essential. A Bibliography is optional.
• Special attention will be given to correct spelling, grammar and punctuation.

NOTE: ONLY fully-cited and footnoted discussion/narrative/components are acceptable.

PLAGIARISM IS NOT ACCEPTED. All work must be original and cannot be copied verbatim from books, computer reproductions, speeches, poems or any other written materials.

NOTE: DO NOT PUT THE STUDENT’S/YOUTH’S NAME ON THE ENTRY-ESSAY.

Rather, staple the essay to the Essay Entry Form. If submitting electronically, put a “nickname” on each page of the Essay and on the Essay Entry Form
